2015+ PMX Source Unit - Software Updates

WARNING
Software updates for select PMX source units are designed to be performed by Authorized Rockford Fosgate dealers. Improperly updating the software can render your source unit useless, requiring the software to be reinstalled.  Only upgrade files must be reside on drive.  Additional files (mov, mp4, etc.) residing on the USB Flash Drive will cause the upgrade to fail.

CHECK SOFTWARE VERSIONS
Check to see if your source unit is eligible for a software update by comparing the versions to our Software Downloads table below. 
Check Software Version

  1. Press and hold the MENU button.  The SETTINGS menu will appear.
  2. Turn the volume knob and push to select SOFTWARE > VERSION.
  3. Compare PMX versions to software available below.

FORMAT USB DRIVE
Please ensure USB drive is 32 GB max formated to FAT16 or FAT32. The PMX radios do not support NTSF or exFAT.
 

WINDOWS   APPLE
  1. Insert USB drive into USB port
  2. Right-click START, then select FILE EXPLORER
  3. Right-click USB drive
  4. Click FORMAT
  5. Click the FILE SYSTEM list-box and select FAT32
  6. Click START to format the drive
  
  1. Insert USB drive into USB port
  2. Search for DISK UTILITY and open application
  3. Select USB drive and click ERASE
  4. Select MS-DOS (FAT)
  5. Confirm ERASE to format the drive
 
CHECK SERIAL NUMBER
Check to see if your PMX unit requires a Multi-File or Single File update:
PMX Serial Number
  1. Check SERIAL NUMBER on bottom of unit or original PACKAGING.
  2. The SECOND and THIRD digits represent the YEAR.
  3. The FOURTH & FIFTH digits represent the MONTH.


MULTI-FILE UPDATE (2017 & newer)
There are up to (4) four files required to upgrade the source unit.  Starting in 2017, PMX source units supported "Multi-File" update, so all files can be copied to an USB drive and upgraded all at once!
Step 1 Unzip the software downloaded below and copy the raw files (not the folder) labeled below to the root folder of the USB, then insert USB into the RF unit.
  • "RF_GUI_Vxxx.img"
  • "RF_DECODE_Vxxx.mva"
  • "RF_MCU_Vxxx.smx"
  • "RF_BT_Vxxx.dfu"
Step 2 Select SRC to USB, and wait until "Multi-File" Update? is displayed.   Rotate the multi-function knob to "YES" and press to start the upgrade process.
Step 3 The source unit will cycle through each file above.
Step 4 When upgrade is finished, the unit will reset automatically.

 
SINGLE FILE UPDATE (2016 & older)
There are up to (4) four files required to upgrade the source unit.  You cannot save all (4) four files on one USB.  Each file must be individually copied and upgraded one-by-one to the source unit.  Files must be installed exactly as shown below.  Installing files out of order will cause upgrade to fail.
 
Step 1 GUI: *.img (Graphical User Interface)
  1. Unzip the software downloaded below and copy the raw file (not the folder) labeled "RF_GUI_Vxxx.img" to the root folder of the USB, then insert USB into the RF unit.
  2. Select SRC to USB, and wait until "RF & Decoder upgrade?" is displayed, it will then upgrade automatically.
  3. Upgrade is finished and the unit will reset automatically.

Step 2 DECODE: *.mva (Audio Decoder)

  1. Unzip the software downloaded below and copy the raw file (not the folder) labeled "RF_DECODE_Vxxx.mva" to the root folder of the USB, then insert USB into the RF unit.
  2. Select SRC to USB, and wait until "RF & Decoder upgrade?" is displayed. Rotate the volume knob to select "YES" or "NO". When "YES" is selected, press the volume knob to confirm upgrade.
  3. The upgrade is finished and the unit will reset automatically.

Step 3 MCU: *.smx (Micro Controller Unit)

  1. Unzip the software downloaded below and copy the raw file (not the folder) labeled "RF_MCU_Vxxx.smx" to the root folder of the USB, then insert USB into the RF unit.
  2. Select SRC to USB, and wait until "RF & Decoder upgrade?" is displayed. Rotate the volume knob to select "YES" or "NO". When "YES" is selected, press the volume knob to confirm upgrade.
  3. The unit will display a black screen for several seconds then it will reset automatically and continue.
  4. After upgrade is finished, the unit will go into a powered-off state automatically.

Step 4 BLUETOOTH: *.dfu (Bluetooth Module)

  1. Unzip the software downloaded below and copy the raw file (not the folder) labeled "RF_BT_Vxxx.dfu" to the root folder of the USB, then insert USB into the RF unit.
  2. Select SRC to USB, and wait until "RF & Decoder upgrade?" is displayed, it will then upgrade automatically.
  3. Upgrade is finished and the unit will reset automatically.

PMX-1R PMX-1R software updates must be performed by Rockford Fosgate.  Please contact customer support at 1-800-669-9899 for a complementary update. You must contact customer support for an RA# prior to shipping any PMX-1R to Rockford Fosgate. There is 1 file in this software upgrade.

Before upgrading software, retain connection between PMX-CAN and PMX-8BB or PMX-5CAN.  Keep opposite end of PMX-CAN disconnected from CANbus system.
